Product Review: Purity Farms Organic Ghee Clarified Butter

Product: Purity Farms Organic Ghee Clarified Butter

If you are like me and have food sensitivities or are lactose intolerant Ghee Clarified Butter might be for you. I never really gave much thought to my butter being a dairy product, but it is.
One day a friend of mine introduced me to Ghee butter, I had never heard of it. Ghee is a clarified butter and it is used in Indian cuisine.

Price

For a 13 ounce jar on the internet prices range from $8.29-$9.09. If you are interested in picking up a jar and trying it for yourself, you can find it at iHerb.com, LuckyVitamin.com and Vitacost.com. I also located it on Amazon.com, but it was surprisingly $14.65 for a 13 ounce jar.

Ghee is a clarified butter that goes through a longer cooking process. This process causes the butter to caramelize which allows milk solids to be removed easily. For this reason it is better tolerated by the lactose intolerant. This particular brand of Ghee is lactose and casein free. It is a Kosher product and salt free as well.

Ghee doesn’t need to be refrigerated and has a long shelf life, just keep the lid sealed tight and store it in a cool, dry place. Ghee can take the place of cooking with butter. It can be a good alternative to butter as it sustains higher temperatures.

Pros

  • It is considered to have a higher smoke point 400-475 degrees which makes it perfect for sautéing.
  • It has a long shelf life as long as you keep the lid tightly sealed and store it in a cool dry place.
  • Ghee doesn’t need to be refrigerated, which is great because living in Florida during storm season we tend to lose electricity.
  • I like it because it melts easily over vegetables.
  • It tastes great in spicy foods.
  • I like the fact that it has no GMO feed, is pasture raised and is grass fed.
  • If you are concerned about your sodium intake, it is a salt free product and it is Kosher as well.
  • For me the most important thing is, it is well tolerated by people who are lactose intolerant and have other food sensitivities.
  • It is lactose and casein free.

Cons

  • I made the mistake of refrigerating it and it became as hard as a rock. I gave it some counter time and it softened up nicely.
  • It does taste different from butter, and it took some getting used to.
  • Personally for me, it lends itself more to cooking than on toast.
  • Just like butter, don’t go overboard even for cooking 1-2 tablespoons per day.

Rating

If it weren’t for my friend, I would have never come across this product. It is a very good product especially if you need to avoid lactose, but the flavor takes some getting used to. Because of that I am giving it a 4/5.

It works well for cooking and is great to melt on your veggies. You may want to give it a try to add a new flavor to one of your favorite dishes. As for me putting it on my toast, it is just not the same as real butter, but a little honey or preserves does the trick.
