For those unfamiliar with you, can you tell us a bit about your background and how you got involved in the fitness industry?
As a newborn I was diagnosed with Atrial Septal Defect (ASD) which is a serious form of congenital heart defect. This defect gave me a fifty-fifty chance of survival. I was rushed into emergency open heart surgery that thankfully went extremely well and gave me a fighting chance at leading a normal and healthy lifestyle. Despite my birth defect and my petite size, I was naturally drawn to activities that were physical in nature. I loved the art of dance and began exploring different genres of dance such as hula, hip hop, and cheer. As a developing young woman I had self-image insecurities about being too thin and not having a body that looked more like a full figured woman. At the age of 20, I made the decision to take the initiative in creating a better self-image, so I hired a personal trainer and got my first taste of body building. Watching the progression of my body transformation, I knew that I had tapped into something special and the rest is history!
Tell us a little about your pregnancy. Did you have to modify your training and how long were you able to train?
Motherhood first off has been an incredible journey and such a blessing in itself. I know during pregnancy many women want to enjoy that time and not worry. But, since giving birth to my first daughter, she gave me even more motivation to stay fit and healthy. When I found out I was going to be embarking on another adventure, I knew that I needed to maintain a healthy balance by incorporating exercise and nutrition diet while ensuring the health and safety of my baby. During my recent pregnancy I was diagnosed with Intrauterine Growth Restriction (IUGR), and I had a difficult time maintaining a healthy pregnancy weight. Despite the diagnosis and complications, I felt completely fine during my pregnancy. My only concern was trying to gain weight, so I continued with a regime that included light cardio, fast paced walking and light weight lifting to maintain my muscle and tone. This training regime lasted until my last trimester due to my diagnosis.
How long did it take you to get back into shape after giving birth, and what advice do you have for new moms who are trying to lose baby weight?
During my pregnancy my total weight gain was 18 lbs. Because of my ‘maintenance’ during the pregnancy, I was able to get back into shape fairly quickly. It took about 3 months to get back to my ‘normal’ weight and gain back the muscle that I had lost. I think the best advice for a new mom trying to lose baby weight is:
- Stay focused on the end result!
- Hold on to hope and the motto that anything that you want will not be an easy task, but it takes hard work, discipline and determination.
- Preparation is key; both strategically and mentally.
- Know your why. Is it for you, your family, or are you starting a new and healthy lifestyle altogether? This will be the basis of your motivation while working out and for your meal planning.
What’s the best part of being a new mom?
It is so difficult to simplify say what the best part of being a new mom is. But I think the most important part of being a new mom is having the opportunity to watch a new life evolve and grow.
How did you become involved with Magnum Nutraceuticals? And tell us a little bit about the demos and what you love most about them?
Initially, I was introduced to Magnum Nutraceuticals through an informal education and training at Nutrimart Nutrition Elements with Markus Kaulius, Magnum President. During the session I learned all about their product line. At that time, I had been using a few of their products, but after the training session I was extremely impressed and was given the opportunity to try out more of their products. Occasionally, Markus and I communicated back and forth, and he eventually presented me with the opportunity to get involved directly with Magnum by becoming a sponsored athlete. It was such a great opportunity that I jumped at the chance. I knew that Magnum products were reputable and made with the highest quality of ingredients that offered results, so it was an honor to be able to represent an organization of Magnum’s magnitude. When my sponsorship began, it worked out great that I had a working relationship with both Nutrimart and Magnum. I began giving demos on Magnum’s supplements at various events, including the Olympia and The Arnold Sports Festival. I thoroughly enjoy demoing at these events; it is an opportunity to network, be social, educate, and promote the brand as well as serve as a testimony to real customers as to how well Magnum Nutraceuticals products work.

Right now I’m off season, so I’m flexible with my workouts. Currently, my goal is to rebuild and focus on tightening my core and work on my glutes.

Do you prep your meals and if so how long does it take you?
Yes, I do prep my meals. I think prepping is important that way there are no excuses to cheat. It takes me 1-2 hours to cook and prepare my meals. Sometimes my chicken takes a little longer because I like to throw it in a crock pot with spices and herbs to make it juicy and tender.
Did your diet change while you were pregnant, and what did you crave the most?
I did eat things that I normally don’t. One thing I craved the most was salty and sour foods. I would top my salad with strawberries and pickles then use pickle juice as my dressing. (Laughs)
I noticed on your Instagram page it says “God 1st”. Tell us about that.
God 1st is representative of me because I am a true believer that, if you put God first before anything else, all other things will fall into place. God has been the cornerstone of my life and how I live out my life. God has served as my inspiration and my guide for every decision I have made in my life. Having God as the basis for everything I’ve done and will do has made the quality of my life that much better!
What are your hobbies and interests outside of the fitness industry?
I love spending quality time and traveling with my family. Sundays are my favorite; we go to church and do family outings together.
