For those unfamiliar with you, can you tell us a bit about your background and how you got involved in the fitness industry?

I’ve always been kind of ‘accidentally’ fit because I was always active doing things, like running, horseback riding and skiing, but I didn’t have a strong focus until just a few years ago. In 2009, I tore my ACL skiing, and I had to have it surgically reconstructed. While I was rehabbing, my sad, atrophied leg, I really got into fitness. I’d go to the gym and because I had focus and a plan, I was starting to actually see results and appreciate my muscles like I never had before. It snowballed from there, but I am very shy and awkward, so I didn’t actually work up the courage to get on a stage until 2013!

What were your biggest challenges when you first started training?

Physically it was my weak leg, which is still trying to catch up! But I also had some mental struggles; it took me a long time to shake intimidation and feel confident in the weight room. I really had to teach myself to just put on my music, tune everything else out and lift my weights. Sometimes I still worry that I look too tiny, but I’m better at pushing those thoughts away than I used to be.

What’s the one thing you look forward to treating yourself to after a competition?

A shower, then a sugar filled energy drink! (Laughs)

Tell us a little about Apple Saddlery. What do you do there, and how long have you worked there?

I love Apple Saddlery! It’s a store that sells a mix of equestrian supplies, high end outerwear and other random things that are fun and cool. We have hammocks, ukuleles and retro roller skates! I’ve been there since 2008, and I look after the social media, and the ordering for the equestrian side of the store. I love choosing cute horse outfits for us to sell, and then show them to other horse people online. So I basically spend my days wrapped up in my office like a burrito. (Laughs)

How did you become involved with Magnum Nutraceuticals? And tell us a little bit about the demos and what you love most about them?

When I started using supplements Magnum quickly became my favorite company, simply because their products always did exactly what they said they were going to do. When I didn’t know anything else about supplements, I knew Magnum worked. I loved that Magnum was clean and honest brand when it seemed like so many other companies were just out to make a buck. Being a sponsored athlete with just any company wasn’t a huge goal for me, but I knew I wanted to be involved with Magnum to some capacity. At the time, I was Facebook friends with Markus and in 2014 when I heard he was coming to Ottawa, I sent him a cheeky little message along the lines of “let’s have lunch while you’re here; I’m going to be a Magnum Athlete someday”. (Laughs) We didn’t have lunch. (Laughs) I didn’t even see him on that visit, but he put me in touch with Magnum’s brand manager, and I eventually got a phone interview, which led to a sponsorship.

The thing I love most about giving Magnum demos is hearing people’s specific goals and telling them how Magnum can help them reach their goals. When a person is training or eating a specific way to reach a health or fitness goal, they’re making sacrifices for something that is important to them. So it’s really fun and rewarding to help them get even better results from their hard work by choosing the right supplements.

This is my current training split. And once or twice a week my husband and I will return to the gym in the evening for a high rep/low weight workout with his 3 kids; ages 12, 14 and 16.

What’s your favorite exercise for arms and why?

I like crucifix curls because they burn out my arms, and I think my shoulders look good when I’m doing them! (Laughs)

What kind of headphones do you wear when you train? And what music gets you motivated?

I wear Sony; I won them at a Popeye’s party a couple of years ago, and I love them! I listen to a lot of electro swing in the gym, but I also have way more than my fair share of power ballads on my iPod. And if I’m squatting or deadlifting, you can bet that I’m listening to Celine Dion or Whitney Houston.

What does your current diet look like?

You might notice some odd protein choices. (Laughs) I’ve been a vegetarian for most of my life. I introduced fish a couple of years ago, but for the most part, I avoid it. And I don’t eat any sea critters, like crab. Currently, I’m not dieting for a competition, so this is a typical day for me.

  • Meal 1: 1 Scoop Chocolate Quattro and 1 Apple
  • Meal 2: (Post Workout) 1 Scoop Vanilla Quattro, ½ Cup Raspberries, 1 Scoop Vitargo, 1 Scoop Magnum G and 1 Scoop Performance Greens
  • Meal 3: ¾ Cup Oats Dry Measure, 1 Cup Egg Whites and 2 Tablespoons Almond Butter
  • Meal 4: 3-4 Cups Raw Spinach, 1 Cup Fat Free Cottage Cheese and ½ Cup Raspberries
  • Meal 5: 1 Can Tuna, 1 Small Mashed Avocado and 7 Plain Rice Cakes
  • Meal 6: (Bedtime Shake) 1 Scoop Chocolate Quattro

You are quite an animal lover, tell us a little about that.

I am! I love all critters, so I keep collecting more and now we have a hairy, scaly, stinky little army. I’m not really sure why I think they’re all so cute. (Laughs)

What are your other hobbies and interests outside of the fitness industry?

I lead a thrilling life outside the gym! I really love to read, so much that I’ll pretty much read any book or paper I can get my hands on. I have a Dressage horse named Oscar. Try picturing a horse doing ballet and you’ll get a pretty good mental image of what Oscar does. (Laughs) I’m also practicing to knit myself a full onesie with little booties to wear at work, but I need to get a little bit better before I can reach that dream. (Laughs)
