8 Favorite Popular Diet Foods That Can Keep You Fat

Could your favorite diet food be keeping you fat? If you’re eating these 8 foods, the answer could be yes. Although most of these favorite diet foods are wrapped in flashy packaging, the labels are commonly deceptive.

My best advice, know what you’re eating. Use these Beastly better options to get your scale moving in the right direction.

Diet Food # 1 Diet Sodas

Anything that is labeled ‘diet’ means it has chemicals and sweeteners added to it to give it sweetness. These chemicals can keep your belly bloated and can cause gastrointestinal issues. These chemicals can also enhance sugar cravings which lead to unwanted weight gain.

Better Beastly Option

Quench your thirst with water or green tea. Green tea is full of antioxidants and will provide you with an energy boost rather than soda which can cause you to crash after you drink it. Add fresh slices of lemon, lime or cucumber to your water and chill it.

Diet Food # 2 Granola

Before adding milk, one cup of granola can easily contain over 500 calories and can contain over 26 grams of fat. Granola also has an extremely high sugar content.

Better Beastly Option

For a healthier option, opt for oatmeal, bran flakes or rice flakes. For natural sweetness, add ½ cup of fresh fruit. For extra crunch, top it with a tablespoon of chopped almonds. Top it off with cinnamon or nutmeg.

Diet Food # 3 Side Salad with Fat Free Dressing

Although most dieters think salad is a healthy option, it’s not. Salad itself has no nutritional food value. And fat free dressings are usually pumped with fillers and sugars to give it taste. And let’s not forget about those croutons which are baked or fried.

Better Beastly Option

When dinning out, order dressings and oils on the side. By ordering the dressings and oils on the side, you can have more control over the amount you consume. Don’t forget to ditch the croutons. Better yet, when dinning out ask for steamed vegetables or create your own spinach salad at home.

Diet Food # 4 Smoothies

Drink one smoothie and you can easily gulp down 500 calories and still be hungry. Most smoothies are not only high in calories, they’re packed with sugar.

Better Beastly Option

At the smoothie stand, cut down on the calories by requesting 1 piece of fruit and replace the juice with fresh vegetables. At home, make your own smoothie. Use a low calorie unsweetened almond milk, 1 scoop of your favorite protein powder and add ½ cup of berries or fresh fruit. Protein shakes make a great alternative liquid alternative if you don’t have time for a whole meal and you can cut the sugar and calories down by more than half of a smoothie.

Diet Food # 5 Sugar Free Candy and Cookies

Just because it’s labeled sugar free, doesn’t mean it is calorie free. Most people tend to over indulge in sugar free products thinking they’re eating a healthier option.

It doesn’t matter how you cut it, consuming more calories than you need leads to weight gain. Anything that is labeled sugar free contains chemicals and fillers which can also contribute to an expanding waistline.

Better Beastly Option

Craving something sweet? Opt for graham crackers or try baking at home. When you bake at home, you can control the ingredients going into your cookies and candy. To get started, check out some of the delicious low calorie desserts on this site.

Diet Food # 6 Trail Mix

Pre-packaged trail mix usually has a high caloric and sugar content because it’s for a hike, not for the office. And if the trail mix contains dried fruit, it’s more than likely deep fried.

Better Beastly Option

Make your own. Get creative, use nuts, and oats or a puffed cereal such as kamut, millet or rice. Sprinkle in cinnamon or nutmeg and add a little Celtic salt for flavor. Portion your homemade trail mix into snack sized bags. The key here is portion control.

Diet Food #7 Yogurt

Plain yogurt contains natural sugar. But flavored yogurt can contain twice as much sugar. Flavored yogurt is full of sugar and contains flavoring agents to give it flavor. Fat free and sugar free yogurts are pumped with artificial chemicals and sweeteners.

Better Beastly Option

Select plain or Greek yogurt and top it with ½ cup of fresh fruit.

Diet Food # 8 Veggie Chips

Veggie chips usually contain a high sodium and fat content. One handful of these so called ‘healthy’ chips can easily contain a whopping 10 grams of fat. Veggie chips may have a ‘healthier’ look because of their coloring, but these chips can contain coloring agents to give them a healthier appearance. Read the label; are they made with corn or potato flour? Ditch them.

Better Beastly Option

Create your own veggie platter or pick one up at the grocery store. Replace the dip with cottage cheese or hummus. You can also try one of my favorite recipes for cauliflower popcorn or kale chips.
