A Complete Guide To: Earthing and Grounding

Recently I was introduced to what is known as Earthing and Grounding. I won’t lie; originally I thought it was a bunch of phooey. I recall Dr. Oz doing a segment on this topic and although he takes a more sensationalistic approach, I feel there is merit to this topic, so I thought I would keep an open mind.

My theory has always been, don’t knock it until you try it. As I write this, I am eagerly awaiting my grounding device, and I will share my experience with you. While I was doing research for my pocket guide I unearthed dozens of testimonials from individuals who shared the positive benefits they received from Earthing and Grounding.

What is it?

Earthing and Grounding provide a naturally, simple, safe way to reconnect to the earth. Our earth has a natural energy field, and most of us have a disconnect from the healing benefits which the earth provides. The natural energy from the earth provides us with the reconnection our body needs when we have been indoors all day.

Earthing and Grounding is simple and can be done by taking off your shoes and using your bare feet as a primary contact point. You can then either place your bare feet on the earth or a grounding device. The natural energy from the earth can provide anti-aging properties and natural health remedies. Grounding can be done from indoors by using an Earthing product.

How does it work?

Earth’s electrical properties are always negative and pain is related to a positive charge. Earthing and grounding work by reducing the electric voltages and help us maintain an electrical balance in our body.

Why it works?

Earthing and Grounding can restore a natural source of earth’s energy including Vitamin D by reducing the amount of environmental electromagnetic fields (EMF’s). Your body will only absorb the amount of electrons that are needed to maintain the same electrical potential the earth has. This will enable your body to restore what was lost during the metabolic process.

Athlete Tips:

Elevated white blood cells are highly responsible for inflammation and increase delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS). When a body is grounded, white cells significantly decrease, and this provides less inflammation throughout the body.

What does this mean for an athlete? Decreased inflammation will allow an athlete to train harder and recover quicker. Joint pain and muscle pain will be reduced and there will be less biomechanical stress on the back, feet and spinal column; this will accelerate the healing process.

Coaches and top athletes are aware of this. During Tour de France athletes used recovery bags which allowed them to recover at a rapid pace and train harder.

How can you pick up healing energy from the earth?

To start Earthing place the soles of your bare feet on the earth. Try damping the grass or the soil, this will give you better conductivity. You can place your hands and legs on the earth too. You should be able to feel the benefits of reconnecting your body to earth within just twenty to thirty minutes. You can do this two to three times a day for the most benefits. If you have compromised health do it longer, but be sure to consult with your doctor before you get started.

  • Grass
  • Soil
  • Sand
  • Sidewalk
  • Concrete slab or ground
  • Concrete basement floor
  • Other conductive substances
  • Ocean salt water

Note:

Be wary of fertilizers and pesticides. If you cannot go bare foot, wear moccasins instead of rubber soled foot wear.

Avoid:

  • Asphalt
  • Carpet
  • Ceramic tiles with a glazed finish
  • Glass surface
  • Painted surfaces
  • Plastic, rubber shoes, thick leather soled shoes
  • Tile that is on plastic, plywood or vinyl structure

How can you pick up healing energy from grounding?

If the weather outside is nasty, grounding indoors will be your best option. These items allow you to be Grounded while inside.

  • Desk pads
  • Foot pad
  • Mouse pads
  • Sheets and recovery bags

Place your bare feet or skin on the Earthing products just like you would on the earth. This will allow the natural energy from the earth to be carried inside directly to you. The grounded product must be properly grounded to an electric outlet or plugged into the earth by direct contact.

First you will have to determine if your wall outlets are properly grounded. Once you make that determination; you will know how to proceed. I had to check with Tom, my maintenance guy who assured me that my building was properly grounded. If you have no one to ask; you can purchase an outlet ground checker at a hardware store.

Earthing products come with a standard twelve foot cord, one end of the cord inserts to the product, and the other end plugs into your already grounded outlet. This cord can be used if the wall outlet inside your home or office is grounded.

Depending on country you live in adapters are available. If you live in a country outside the United States you will need to purchase an adapter or grounded plug which can be purchased on Amazon.com.

If you do not have a grounded outlet then, you will have to purchase a grounding rod. Grounding rods vary in length and can be purchased separately for approximately $30.00. The grounding rod would then be placed outside below a window or a door. Once you get the appropriate cord length, the rod is inserted into the earth.

Whether you are an athlete, suffering from a health condition, or are interested in the healing benefits the earth can provide; I encourage you to step outside your box and plug into the earth.

While I am waiting for my grounding device to arrive, why not give it a try. Please leave a comment below and share your experience with us.

Addendum

My grounding device finally arrived, and I have been using it for a little over a week now. I first tried the device under my laptop; however, this did not work too well because my wrists weren’t in contact with the pad.

I ended up placing the grounding device on the floor and standing on it while using the computer. This has been working out fine for me. I have noticed an improved difference with my ability to stay on the computer for longer lengths of time. Prior to my grounding device arriving, I was having some sensitivity issues to EMF’s.
