Find out Nate’s secret to his incredible arm development and what he craves the most.

For those unfamiliar with you, can you tell us a bit about your background and how you got involved in the fitness industry?

After graduating from Ohio State University in 2008, I began working as a personal trainer. My early business success in personal training and a growing passion for nutrition allowed me the opportunity to expand and own a Max Muscle Sports Nutrition store. I felt that this was naturally the next phase for me because there was such a void of local nutrition shops educating customers and offering quality products.

What were your biggest challenges when you first started training?

My biggest challenge was nutrition. I always focused on my training and made it a priority, but I never utilized proper nutrition and the timing of nutrients to promote my optimal performance.

Tell us about Max Muscle Sports Nutrition in Pickerington, Ohio. How long have you owned it, what do you love most about it, and what makes it not your ‘typical’ nutrition store?

Max Muscle in Pickerington has been open for 5 years. I have been the sole owner since January 1, 2016. What I love about the shop and what we do as a store that is not ‘typical’ go hand in hand. We focus on quality products and education. Our team is not simply a team of ‘sales people’. We are staffed with certified nutrition coaches; this allows us to offer the highest education and enables us to explain the science of supplementation, nutrition and training. This gives our customers a better understanding of how it all works together, so that they can achieve peak performance and lifestyle balance.

How did you become involved with The Protein Cookie Company, and what do you love most about them?

I first came across The Protein Cookie Company through social media. Immediately after that, a customer who had tried The Protein Cookie Company’s Protein Cookies before also highly recommended them. I love that The Protein Cookie Company offers such a tasty and nutritionally sound product. The Protein Cookie Company’s Cookies have an excellent nutritional profile that can fit into anyone’s nutritional program; they are also free of artificial sweeteners and preservatives. There is an increasing demand for nutritional products that are free from artificial sweeteners and preservatives, and I saw The Protein Cookie Company’s Protein Cookies as a great fit for my shop.

What flavors are The Protein Cookie Company’s Protein Cookies available in your store? And what is the top selling flavor?

We offer all of the 4 flavors in The Protein Cookie Company’s Protein Cookies, Classic Chocolate Chip, Dark Cocoa Chocolate Chip, Oatmeal Raisin and Peanut Butter. The best-selling Protein Cookie in my shop is the Classic Chocolate Chip Protein Cookie.

Tell us about some of the high quality ingredients in The Protein Cookie Company’s Protein Cookies, and what makes them a perfect fit for your store?

Quality is crucial in today’s nutrition market. So many companies are being caught up with misleading labels, poor quality ingredients and sometimes even hiding banned substances. The Protein Cookie Company is made in a GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) certified facility. This is a statement to The Protein Cookie Company’s commitment to label accuracy and quality manufacturing. The Protein Cookie Company’s Protein Cookies are free of artificial sweeteners and preservative free, and they don’t use cheap proteins such as Soy. The Protein Cookie Company’s Cookies contain some of the highest quality ingredients including whey isolate which is a fast absorbing protein. And Stevia is used a natural sweetener; they also have 0 trans-fats and are free of GMO’s. The high quality ingredients and The Protein Cookie Company’s Cookies great nutrition profile make them a perfect fit for my shop. We live in such a fast paced world today and that won’t be changing; that’s why we offer ‘fast food’ that’s nutritionally sound for our customer’s that are always on the go. Plus, I have a strong sweet tooth myself, and these leave me guilt free. (Laughs)

When working with nutritional clients, are you able to incorporate The Protein Cookie Company’s Protein Cookies into their meal plan?

Absolutely! So many clients are busy and on the go; they need a quality product that can give them the nutrition that their bodies need while on the move, and that’s where The Protein Company’s Cookie comes in. And anyone with a sweet tooth can appreciate The Protein Company’s Protein Cookies. Anytime you can provide the proper nutrition for a client and be able to satisfy their sweet tooth at the same time, it is a win, win! (Laughs)

Where does your motivation come from?

My motivation comes from within; it’s the desire to always be better and to achieve more. Whether it is my own nutrition and training or my business, complacency simply won’t do. To become better and achieve the business goals I have, coming from where I’ve been, you have to be hungry and stay hungry. Because once you think you have made it, you haven’t; there is always someone else hungrier to take what you have. I choose to lead by example for my business and our community, and I’m passionate about providing the best services and education to my clientele. I feel privileged to work with some truly amazing people, and I hold myself to a high standard which crosses over to them.

Tell us a little about your nutrition and training philosophy.

I believe in balanced fitness; it is important to have functional strength and cardio vascular health. Most of us want to ‘look’ good, but it is important to remember that long term health is crucial. Nutrition is not about ‘perfection’; it’s about making good food choices more often than not and having those occasional ‘cheat’ meals to keep your sanity. Balanced nutrition and training simply provides longevity, a better quality of life both physically and emotionally.

What is your secret to your incredible arm development?

I think it is safe to say most males want ‘killer’ arms. Our ego wants us to fill up our sleeves and look like a pair of legs grew from our shoulders in a tank top! (Laughs) My secret, DO NOT lift heavy on arms! I often see many people, especially males, using their ego to try and lift the same weight as the ‘big guy’ in the gym. By using moderate weight that you can control and focusing on form, you can get a much better stretch and contraction of the muscles. This gives the arms the opportunity to grow bigger and faster.

How do you incorporate The Protein Cookie Company’s Protein Cookies into your own meal plan? And do you have a favorite?

I typically eat 3-4 Protein Cookies a week to satisfy my sweet tooth. But I won’t deny eating 5 in one sitting for a very fulfilling Saturday night treat! (Laughs) It’s a lot better for my health and waistline, and a great alternative for a sweet snack. Although I eat all 4 flavors, The Protein Cookie Company’s Chocolate Chip Cookie is my go to.

How does Muscle Max get involved in your community?

We are very active in the community. We provide demos in gyms and Cross Fit boxes, and 5k’s. We also educate a variety of groups and businesses in our community on the importance of safe supplementation and nutrition. I’ve had the opportunity to host a local women’s leadership coalition, I’ve spoken at chamber of commerce meetings, and I provide a yearly nutrition seminar for our local fire department. Most recently, I spoke with a local high school football program for grades 9-12 on proper nutrition and supplementation. These are just some of the things we are involved in.

What are your hobbies and interests outside of the fitness industry?

Fortunately, my hobbies and interests are fitness. I truly love what I do! Even though as an entrepreneur, I do not get much down time and put in about 80-90 hours in a week, I understand the importance of taking a break. I like to travel to the beach and relax or go paddle boarding for fun physical activity. I also do my best to detach from my laptop and cellphone for a few days; this allows me to recharge and refocus.
